Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) focusing on Gender equality, is essential for a sustainable, peaceful, and prosperous world. Achieving it by 2030 demands strong leadership, investments, and policy reforms. The UAE, a regional leader, actively promotes gender equality through initiatives like the UAE Gender Balance Council and advocacy for increased female representation in the Federal National Council (FNC). The nation's commitment to gender equality is evident in its goal to have 20 women on executive boards in UAE companies by 2020, marking significant progress in enhancing female workforce participation since 1975.
Ajman University (AU) is a dedicated advocate for advancing essential agendas, including gender equality and women's empowerment, in alignment with SDG 5. Key initiatives and practices include:
Diversity and Representation: Women make up a substantial portion of AU's student body, faculty, and staff, providing diverse perspectives and experiences for discussions on women's roles in achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and broader sustainability objectives.
Ajman University Women Empowerment Council (AUWEC): AU has established AUWEC to actively promote women's involvement across various fields, amplify their research participation, and celebrate their achievements.
Gender Equality Policies: AU consistently upholds its commitment to gender equality through non-discriminatory policies and practices, resulting in impressive female enrollment and graduation rates.
Inclusive Environment: As an Equal Opportunity Employer, AU maintains an inclusive atmosphere, offering access initiatives such as mentoring and scholarships for all, reinforcing the institution's dedication to gender equality.
Leadership and Engagement: Women from diverse backgrounds lead various aspects of AU's educational and extracurricular programs, contributing to a culture of gender equality. Notably, more women graduate from AU than men.
The pursuit of gender equality and women's empowerment is integral to all 17 SDGs, ensuring that economies and social structures benefit everyone and that the responsibility toward the environment extends to present and future generations. AU actively contributes to these objectives.
